The actual name of Marsala probably derives from the Arab noun Marsha
el Ali ( or Allah), God’s Port, a testimony of its importance as
sea town. The port of Marsala is very important for the story of Italy.
Garibaldi’s ships docked there, on May 11th 1860 and Italy’s
unification started from Marsala. The ancient Porta Garibaldi leads to
the centre of the town where you can admire museums, churches, old Spanish
buildings.
